Yahoo! Digital Home

Here's a video showing what personalized  information overlays on TV channels might behave like. It was part of a CES demo in 2006 that where Yahoo! was attempting to show "connected" life would work in a simulated home. (Got to meet Tom Cruise and Ellen Degneris as part of this show). They won't remember.

DIVER Project at Stanford

DIVER was an innovative project at Stanford that explored how panoramic video of real-world scenes could be used to analyze teaching and learning. Members of the team included  Roy Pea who was the lead investigator of the project. Other team members included Joe Rosen and the chief engineer, Ken Dauber and myself.  The work was awarded several patents for capturing and analzying video data.

DIVER Low Fidelity Prototype

Here's a good example of a low fidelity prototype I developed illustrating how DIVER might be used. This prototype was instrumental in Stanford receiving an NSF grant to build a working system for panoramic capture and recording

MOBILE DIVER scenario

Another good example of early stage prototyping is the use of cartoon storyboards to convey the nature of a proposed product. This one shows how an marine surveyor could use annotate and share video to generate and insurance claim.

Graphic Facilitation

One of the skills I picked up along the way was facilitating group problem solving  and brainstorming by doing real-time sketching of ideas as they unfold. This activity is not for the faint of heart because you are up there before a crowd editing and recording the flow of ideas generated by large groups (10-20 people) on a wall sized sheet of paper. The pioneer of these techniques is David Sibbet of Grove Consulting. It was an interesting sideline to computer based prototyping.

Trustnode -- Harvey Keck

In 2009 I hooked up with Kevin Dunn and Peter Stevenson to found a company called Trustnode. The goal was to develop a conversational interface  featuring a cartoon avatar (Harvey Keck) -to customize  financial services and health insurance to someone's needs. The idea was bring together AI, cognitive psychology, cartooning and data mining to provide entertaining and customized selling experience.
